Southern Maryland Business Community Welcomes New SBDC Leader

The College of Southern Maryland has named James Vasquez as the new regional director of the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) for the Southern Region. In his new role, Vasquez will oversee programs that provide entrepreneurs and small business owners with training, mentorship, and strategic support to help them grow and sustain their businesses.

Vasquez steps into the position with extensive experience in business development, marketing, and entrepreneurship. Prior to this role, he worked as a start-up business consultant in Charles County, where he partnered with the SBDC to guide small businesses through financial planning, branding, and operational growth. His background in project management and customer engagement will be instrumental in shaping the SBDC’s future initiatives.

“I’m honored to step into this role and lead the SBDC’s efforts to empower small business owners in Southern Maryland,” Vasquez said. “By leveraging CSM’s resources and expanding our outreach, we can create more opportunities for entrepreneurs, improve access to capital, and strengthen economic development in the region.”

One of Vasquez’s key priorities is aligning the SBDC’s mission with CSM’s broader workforce development programs, ensuring that small business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs have the necessary support to build successful enterprises. His plans include increasing collaboration between the private and public sectors, fostering innovation, and enhancing diversity within the local business community.

“James brings a strong understanding of business growth and strategy,” said Ellen Flowers-Fields, vice president of Continuing Education and Workforce Development at CSM. “His leadership will be crucial in helping business owners navigate challenges, access funding, and develop strategies for long-term success.”

Vasquez earned a master’s degree in business and marketing management and a bachelor’s degree in advertising from the New York Institute of Technology. His expertise in branding and strategic planning has helped numerous businesses refine their market positioning and expand their reach.

He succeeds Wynne Briscoe, who held the role for eight years before stepping down to enter semi-retirement. Briscoe was widely recognized for her contributions to the business community, earning several accolades, including being named one of Maryland’s 2024 Manufacturing Stars.

The SBDC at CSM offers no-cost consulting, training programs, and resources to support small businesses at every stage. Entrepreneurs interested in learning more about available services can visit CSM’s SBDC website.
