ND SBDC staff complete national AI certification to support North Dakota small businesses
Three advisors from the North Dakota Small Business Development Centers have completed national certification in artificial intelligence through America’s SBDC’s AI University, a program funded by Google.org. The certification equips SBDC advisors with practical AI knowledge and tools to help small business owners improve efficiency, streamline operations and explore new opportunities through emerging technology.
Paul Smith, Fargo–Southeast center director, completed his certification in 2024. Ashley Louw, Devils Lake business advisor, and Alan Gohary, Minot center director, both completed the program in 2025. The trio are among a growing number of SBDC professionals nationwide who are advancing AI skillsets to better serve entrepreneurs in their regions.

“AI is rapidly changing how small businesses operate, and this certification helped me see how we can apply it responsibly and effectively,” said Smith. “We’re learning how to use these tools internally to deliver client services more efficiently while helping small business owners make informed decisions about AI adoption.”

Louw said the training strengthened her ability to guide clients who are curious about AI but unsure where to start.
“Many small business owners are hearing about AI but don’t know how it fits their day-to-day work,” she said. “This program gave us clear, practical examples to share with clients so they can use AI for real productivity gains without being overwhelmed.”
Gohary emphasized the importance of staying ahead of technology trends.

“The AI U certification ensures that ND SBDC advisors can speak confidently about these tools and their potential,” he said. “By understanding how to integrate AI into our own operations, we can better help North Dakota businesses do the same.”
ND SBDC State Director Tiffany Ford said the certifications reflect the organization’s strategic priorities.
“This investment in professional development supports our mission to continually improve operations while preparing our advisors to meet the evolving needs of North Dakota’s business community,” she said. “Our clients look to us for guidance on what’s next, and AI is clearly part of that future.”
The AI U program, launched nationally by America’s SBDC and funded through a $10 million grant from Google.org, provides small business advisors and clients with training, resources and access to AI tools designed to enhance business performance. Through AI clinics and educational initiatives, the program aims to help small businesses use technology to increase efficiency, strengthen customer engagement and expand growth opportunities.
